OMG – The Taking of His Name in Vain

As a follower of Christ, I hold some very strong beliefs on certain issues. Also, as a Christian, there are aspects of my beliefs that I don’t expect to be understood by non-believers. One of those topics is the value of the Name of our Lord.

I understand a non-believer’s use of God’s name in vain, largely due to its overuse in our culture. What really gets me, what really gives me pause is when a believer does it. I feel like our job here on Earth is to bring glory to God in all that we do. To me there are only certain issues of theology that I will fight a person on. They are issues that involve salvation and issues that lessen in some way the perceived glory of God.

To be clear, while I do not advocate or condone profanity in any way, I would rather hear a fellow believer drop an F-bomb than to use the name of our God in vain. That may sound odd, but consider what’s being said.

By throwing out an Oh my …, you have made the Creator of the universe no better in your speech than a just another interjection. I assure you, God is not a part of speech!

As believers, we have an incredible responsibility to live lives that reflect the glory of God. Let us not take lightly that responsibility, and let us most certainly not take lightly the Name of God.
